NEAR FIELD TECHNOLOGY

Near Field technology, is not at all a strange word for us now. Even though it hasn’t conquered the tech world fully, it is expected to make revolution in the field of communication in the near future. So, what is NFC or Near Field Technology?? In simple words, it is a short range wireless communication technique that uses RFID technology for its working. NFC is widely used in smartphones and tablets. It works when the two devices between which the connection is to be established, are at a distance of 20 cm or less. That means it requires the devices to be in less range of distance.

NFC is a fast and convenient way of communication. Its working can be best compared to Bluetooth because both are intended to be used in short range. While Bluetooth needs to set up a connection between the two devices and a pairing code to be matched, NFC eliminates all such requirements. It can be connected directly by keeping the devices in proximity and just by tapping or waving the device across the sensor makes it to work well. NFC technology also uses very less power compared to Bluetooth and thus does not consume the battery much. It has a scope of replacing the Bluetooth technology in the field of E-commerce because of its faster and efficient communication methodology.

Near Field Communication technology has many applications today. It has wide range of uses in E-commerce. It can be used in the platform of social networking by allowing a fast and efficient sharing of files like images, audios, videos etc.  It can be used in contactless payment systems in banking sector. NFC is able to handle electronic documents as well as electronic cards like ATM cards, debit and credit cards etc. It enables us to make quick contactless payments in electronic transactions. One of the striking feature of NFC is that, it is suitable to use in crowded areas with comparatively less interference and thus making the transactions faster. Interesting, right?? Well, in this way, Near Field Communication technique ensures various features like speed, customization as well as security which are the key aspects in any communication technique.

GOODBYE DEAR GEC

What one feels when saying goodbye to the place where one spent four valuable years of their life..?? I don’t think it can be explained. Neither the feeling can be described by any collection of words. The place which brought numerous memories into my life.. The place which made me laugh... the one which brought extreme happy moments... The place which made me cry... the one which brought real sorrows into my life… Thanks for all the experiences and lessons.. I think it’s real time to say goodbye to GEC…

And since the final results are out, I think I can call myself an Engineer now.. Thus proud to proclaim that I’m a B.Tech Graduate now.. Alhamdulillah.. For Allah knows well that without his blessings I would have never made it.. I can’t exactly say what’s running on my mind right now. Mixed emotions are randomly moving across my mind and dominating over my thoughts… Now it’s Post B.Tech life.. Memories are the only thing left behind.. I think I would miss this place…. GOODBYE DEAR GEC…

HUMAN DETECTION USING DOPPLER RADAR

Human detection and tracking are a topic of recent interest because of the increased concerns regarding security and surveillance. Detection and localization of moving human subjects in line-of-sight or through-wall environment can be applied in disaster search-and-rescue operation, physical security, law enforcement, and border patrol. To detect human subjects, various sensor technologies have been developed. They include the use of computer vision, seismic sensor, infrared detectors, lidar, and radar. Among them, radar offers a number of unique advantages compared with the other technologies because it can penetrate obstacles such as walls and can detect targets under various weather conditions. Here,  a method for detecting a human subject using Doppler radar by investigating the physical characteristics of targets is analysed. To classify a target from the Doppler signal, several features related to the physical characteristics of a target are extracted. The features include the frequency of the limb motion, stride, bandwidth of the Doppler signal, and distribution of the signal strength.

Owing to the different lengths of legs and kinematic signatures of the target species, a human subject occupies a unique space in the terms of the stride and the frequency of limb motion. To verify the proposed method, the motions of humans, dogs, bicycles, and vehicles are observed using the developed continuous-wave Doppler radar. The use of the Doppler radar is a natural choice for human detection.  A method for identifying a human subject against other targets using the physical characteristics of a target extracted from the Doppler signals is implemented in this. Human detection has a number of applications in security, surveillance, and search-and-rescue operations.

PIEZOELECTRIC ENERGY HARVESTING

In the last few years, there has been an increasing demand for low-power and portable-energy sources due to the development and mass consumption of portable electronic devices. Also, the portable-energy sources must be associated with environmental issues and imposed regulations. In this context, piezoelectric materials are becoming a better alternative for energy generation and storage in future applications.  In locations where traditional power sources may not be available and long periods of unattended operation are required, the power may become inadequate. In such cases, some source of vibrating energy may be present in operation of the machine.

A piezoelectric source is used to generate power for the operation of a microcontroller and radio transmitter. Also, the use of piezoelectric polymers in order to harvest energy from people walking and the fabrication of a shoe capable of generating and accumulating the energy is a new trend. It can be used in wearable healthcare applications where the healthcare device can harvest its needed power, and sense vital signs from the human body. Ecological security is an important issue in the current scenario. Pollution and ecosystem degradation is often encountered with many energy sources. The method of generating eco-friendly electricity using piezoelectric material helps reducing global warming. The model with piezo material converts the scavenged mechanical energy-vibration and rotation to electrical energy for powering the various electric devices. This allows the material to function as a power harvesting medium. The significance of the proposed approach results in generation of electricity in hilly areas using natural resources and in rural areas through tube-well water pressure.
